Measurement and instrumentation technology for musical instruments

In this session we welcome all papers dealing with measurement methods or systems and their application to musical instruments or to music in general. Especially such contributions will be embraced which can help instrument makers to design or optimise their instruments, musicians to improve their playing techniques and scholars to understand more about quality of sounds or instruments.

Mayer; Alexander:  / P'AN ARTIFICIAL EXCITATION MECHANISM FOR AN ACOUSTICAL COMPARISON OF THE HAMMERED DULCIMER '
Often musical instrument makers need to compare instruments in terms of sound quality. An objective comparison can help the instrument maker to retrace changes in the building processes, as well as in changes on the instrument itself. But how to excite the instrument reproducible?
In this paper, a method for comparing the acoustics of hammered dulcimers is explained. For a consistent and reproducible excitation, a computer controlled excitation mechanism is used. The sound spectra as well as the decay rates are chosen as comparative parameters.
Skala; Jan:  / P'BIAS INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION AND DIAGNOSTIC OF ROOTS BLOWER'
Roots blower was observed using Brass Instrument Analysis System. Acoustic impedance of blower outlet cavity in comparison with brasses periodically changes in accordance with rotors instant angle. BIAS is suitable for describing its ordinary behaviour and diagnostic of abnormalities like influence of surface gaps of gear clearance untightness
